Literature Circles in 2nd Grade????

Literature circles or a book study in 2nd grade? Why yes! We did it and so can you. We had an amazing time working in groups, exploring books, and creating a bond over books. I divided my kiddos into groups according to their reading abilities. Then I assigned them a book that was appropriate. (Yes, I love the idea of the students picking their own books, but I wanted to start off with something I picked.) Then I created these "guides" that would get them through the book without it seeming so daunting.

You can get to this product by clicking the picture.

These activities are great in that some of them are done independently, some are done as groups, and all the pages involve a discussion within the group. There are pages for character, setting, predictions, plot, author's purpose, and main idea.

Has anyone else had success with literature circles in the lower elementary grades? Share your ideas here!

Click the link and jump on over to my TPT store to check it out. Also remember to follow me here and at TPT.

Hi, Jessie ! don't see any way to contact you privately, so I thought I'd leave a comment. :) You have a great blog here and your TPT store looks great.

A fellow teacher brought your site to my attention after she saw your blog/TPT store name and thought it was mine. My site is The Cornerstone For Teachers. Your blog layout and store are nothing like mine, and you're certainly under no obligation to change anything, but I just thought I'd bring the situation to your attention since it looks like you're just starting out and still have the option to tweak your branding a bit. I'm not sure if there is a particular reason why you chose the name "The Cornerstone Classroom" (I don't see anything on the site), but if you're not attached to it, it may be worth changing to avoid more issues with brand confusion as you get established and start reaching more teachers.

Again, just making you aware of the similarity in names. You can do whatever you feel is right with this info. All the best to you in your blogging and selling ventures!

:) Angela

I thought my URL would show up if you clicked on my name, but it takes you to my Blogger profile. The site is called "The Cornerstone", and the URL is http://thecornerstoneforteachers.com/. Thanks. :)

I've noticed several similarities in blog and store names, and I think that a lot of times great minds think alike! If you like your name, I say keep it!! Seeing that your blog and store are different, just means that you had the same great name idea in mind!!

Thanks Angela and Angela. I am new at this and really like my blog name. There are also some major updates coming in the next few days so it would just be too much trouble to change.

As far as the lit circles go, they are a challenge for the teacher in organization, but the students love it and the conversations that develop from it are amazing! Good luck and happy blogging to all!

Actually I was thinking of making the drastic leap to kindergarten next year. Would you say it was a difficult transition? I'm excited and scared all rolled into one. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I do love Kindergarten! I have so much fun every day! I actually went from 2nd to 1st to Kinder so it wasn't too difficult for me. Feel free to ask any questions. I would be glad to help. :)

Your book study packet looks great!

I love your blog design. It is always fun to see a male teacher working with little ones. So many of our kiddos need a positive male role model in their lives. =)

I am happy to be your newest follower. I would love for you to hop over and visit me when you get the chance.
